Olek, the writer of â€Å"Multiple Sclerosis -Etiology, Diagnosis, †¨and New Treatment Strategies† multiple sclerosis (MS) afflicts approximately 250,000 to 350,000 individuals in the United States and is the most common autoimmune disease involving the nervous system. B. Credibility: Approximately 6 years ago my mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which has progressively gotten worse almost resulting in complete disability. C. Thesis Statement: With autoimmune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis on a steady rise over the past decade, three major factors must be considered: the possible causes, common symptoms, and†¦show more content†¦6. This results in the loss of current stability across the nerve, which in turn provides a far less reliable message. Severing of the nerve (axon) can result in numbness or complete paralysis. [Transition: Now that you have a basic intuition of Multiple Sclerosis, lets start by understanding what’s causing it.] B. Causes of Multiple Sclerosis 1. Environmental factors such as trace metals, industrial toxins, and diet have been thought to be a major contributor to the disease. * According to the Texas Department of Health, they were contacted in 1994 by a former El Paso, Texas resident (also had MS) that reported a cluster of MS residents who spent their childhoods in the Kern Place-Mission Hills Area. These residents were being directly linked to the mass pollution produced by the neighboring ASARCO plant. 2. Viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens have been clearly characterized by demyelination and inflammation, it is possible that infectious agents are a triggering factor in MS. 3. Genetics have also been found to be a major contributor and having a first-degree relative such as a parent increases the chances of MS several fold above the general population. * David Rog in the book â€Å"Multiple Sclerosis† states that offspring in which a single parent has MS, the chances of acquiring MS are only 2%.
